Will I lose weight on intermittent fasting?

Yes, you can! And it’s so simple, it can even be done while traveling! I’m going to keep eating, but at a different time of day from the regular time. That means I’ll fast two days a week, and eat all the rest of the time. This is perfect for traveling, where you can’t really plan your meals on the go.

Do I lose weight when I skip breakfast?

I’ve just read two interesting articles:

The two articles are not really related, but they have one point in common: 

  • Your body doesn’t stop burning fat in the morning.
  • Your metabolism is always active.
  • You could skip breakfast, but your body would continue burning fat during the day.

In the first article, the author explains that some scientists don’t really realize why they see less fat burning in the morning and more burning in the afternoon:

A lack of sleep, a morning workout, or other aspects of the day can certainly inhibit people’s metabolic activity and slow down the body’s fat burning capacity. So that’s definitely true, the hours spent awake in the morning often leave us too tired to burn fat!

What happens if I stop eating after lunch?

If your body works on a daily cycle, you could wake up every morning exhausted and end up burning less fat than you would if you ate more. If you skip lunch, you’ll wake up during the middle of the day, feel tired, and not have your energy restored, as a normal lunch would have done.

This leads us to the second article, where the author explains:

"I don’t understand why most companies promote eating breakfast but ignore lunch." This morning I ate a late breakfast after a 4 a.m workout (my usual morning routine), so most likely my body slowed down for the rest of the day. I think I should have breakfast in the morning.

Even if your body doesn’t stop burning fat in the morning when you sleep, it still slows down, and your body can burn around 10% fewer calories. This means that when you eat after lunch, you increase your chances of getting too tired in the evening to eat dinner. This could slow down your metabolism and make your body burn around 10% less fat.

To understand this better, let’s use a simplified version of a normal digestive cycle, where each meal represents breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack. We will use the example of a person who eats 8 meals a day.

The digestive cycle (8 meals)

Breakfast: 40% of the calories consumed in the morning are burned as a reward for eating good breakfast that morning.

Lunch: 50% of the calories consumed in the afternoon are burned as a reward for eating good lunch that day.

Dinner: 30% of the calories consumed in the evening are burned as a reward for eating dinner that day.

Snack: 10% of the calories consumed in the evening are burned as a reward for having a snack that day.

What does this mean for you as a person who works?

When you go to work in the morning, you eat a good breakfast and go for a walk. You get to work and you feel great! On your way to work, you even stop at Starbucks and have a nice cold drink while you are still feeling great.

While you eat at your desk, your body begins the digestion process and your body begins burning the calories. After lunch, you eat a healthy lunch with lots of vegetables and feel ok.

Will I lose weight if I stop eating for three days? 

No. However, if you are eating on a calorie-restricted diet, you can eat normally. If you’re doing crash diet, then you can go on and not eat for 3 days, but it’s not really healthy since you are likely to starve.
